Lately I have been craving green smoothies every morning for breakfast and I know it's because the seasons are changing and I no longer need the warmer foods to start my day. They also make a great lunch option when you're on the go all day.
Green smoothies are packed with nutrients and easy on your digestive system because they are basically pre-chewed for you. My recipe below contains chia seeds, one of my favorite superfoods that's packed with fiber and helps balance blood sugar levels. When water is added to chia seeds they swell to 10 to 15 times their original size forming a gel, which will help you stay full for hours.
Chia seeds also help with cleansing. The fiber and gelatinous consistency promotes optimal digestion, keeping your colon hydrated and making sure that foods move easily through your system.
Some of the other benefits of chia seeds are:
• Very high in Omega-3's (even more than flax seeds!)
• A complete protein
• High in antioxidants (This also allows for the chia seeds to be stored at room temperature for up to 2 years without any preservatives!)
• Loaded with essential vitamins and trace minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, iron, copper, magnesium, manganese, zinc, and niacin.
I also have maca powder in the mix to help balance hormones and it gives you tons of natural energy. Hemp powder for phytonutrients and added protein for vibrant hair, skin, and nails. Cinnamon to help balance blood sugar levels and prevent sugar cravings.
1 small banana
small handful of frozen berries
few leaves of kale
1 TBS maca powder
1/2 TBS cinnamon
2 TBS chia seeds
2 TBS hemp seeds or hemp protein powder
half of one small avocado
1 cup of water (add more for thinner consistency)
Blend all together in high powered blender. Buy organic ingredients if you can. ENJOY!
