3 Ways to Keep Your Body Balanced This Fall

As we begin the transition from summer to fall we can experience some resistance or find it challenging. I know for myself I have a difficult time letting go of summer.  For some, this shift will bring on a more structured or new routine.  We may spend more time in doors and get less sunlight.

 

With this change we are reminded to slow down, the days are shorter and we start to feel the cooler air making its way in.
 

With this shift in seasons, how can we support ourselves: mind and body, to transition with ease?

 

How can we adapt to nature's natural cycles and go with the flow?

 

 

 

 

 

3 ways to support your mind and body during this transition:

 

 

1: CLEANSING

 

Nourishing your body with cleansing and seasonal foods is essential during this time.


The fall is a perfect time to cleanse our body from toxins, pollutants, pesticides, chemicals, and excess ama (toxic residue) that our body has stored from the summer.

 

 

Eliminate or greatly reduce processed foods and alcohol. Drink plenty of water and eat food that doesn't come in a package.

If it's made in a lab, it takes a lab to digest.

Eat cooling fruits such as apples, pears, melons, and cantaloupe to help your body remove any excess any summer heat that may have accumulated.

Select heartier root vegetables such as sweet potatoes, beet, winter squash as well as avocados, tomatoes, red peppers, cooked onions and garlic, brown rice, almond, cashew butter, macadamia nuts, organic chicken, and wild caught salmon (if you eat meat).

 

 

Add pro-biotic rich foods to help restore your gut flora by adding more good bacteria.

Kimchi, sauerkraut and kombucha are all great options.

2: SLOW DOWN

 

 

Reducing your stress load and making more time for self-care is one of the most important elements.  Habitual rushing, multitasking, and dealing with information overload creates toxic overload for the mind.  And like an overtaxed liver, an overtaxed mind and nervous system can lead to an array of health issues, including adrenal fatigue, insomnia, irregular menstrual cycles, indigestion, and weight gain.  

 

So what is the first step in reducing the toxicity created by an overloaded life?

Slowing down.

 

During the next week, adjust your schedule so you have time to prepare and eat your meals in a relaxed manner, practice yoga, journal, breathe.  This is a great time for more introspection, getting quiet and back to or creating a meditation practice. 
 

Make self-care a priority and say no to outside influences that can pull your energy in so many different directions.

When you start to make more time for you and healthy choices you'll begin to tune in to your body's natural rhythms and cleanse more effectively.   You'll feel grounded and find that your are able to "go with the flow" no matter what changes come your way.

 

 

 

 

 

3: CLEANSING YOGA

 

 

Specific yoga poses can aid in the detoxification process.

 

Belly compression, inversions and twisting can help move toxins from your tissues through your lymphatic and digestive systems so that they can be eliminated from the body.
 

In addition, restorative poses, relax the nervous system, turn on your REST + DIGEST system, and help settle the body - which is especially important during and after a detox cleanse.
