Essential oils are an amazing way to support your physical and emotional health in the winter months. Now that the days are shorter, colder, and we spend more time indoors, there are many beautiful essential oils to help you stay vibrant, energized, and prevent colds.
Essential oils have been used for centuries to aid the body in healing. They are found in the seeds, bark, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. Essential oils are powerful medicine from nature and 50-70% more powerful than herbs, so a little bit goes a long way. Most essential oils have anti-microbial, anti-viral, and anti-bacterial properties and range in benefits from protecting us from environmental threats, boosting our moods, supporting our respiratory health, and removing toxins.
It’s important that when you’re using essential oils that they are the best quality, pure, potent and free of chemicals. Unfortunately most brands on the market contain synthetics but can be labeled “Pure” because there is no governing body with essential oils.
The brand that I use in my health-coaching practice and trust is doTERRA essential oils. They are certified pure therapeutic-grade essentials oils and go through 7 different levels of stringent 3rd party testing to ensure there is nothing harmful in their bottles. In fact, I take my essential oils internally everyday to boost my immune system, cleanse my body, and aid digestion. You would never want to do this with just any brand of essential oils.
One of the most amazing things about essential oils is the impact they have on our emotions when they are inhaled. Their chemical constituents are able to go directly from the nose to the limbic system part of the brain and have a direct and immediate effect on emotions. This is because the olfactory nerves in your nose are connected to your limbic system. Think of your limbic system as your happy control center. It controls and regulates our emotions, memory, hormones, heart rate, blood pressure, and elevation of neurotransmitters. By breathing in a pure plant oil you can shift how you feel whether you want to lift your mood, feel more energized, alleviate anxiety, stress, the list goes on.
Here are my top 10 must have oils for winter to keep your mind and body humming:
Frankincense: Frankincense is the king of all oils and the most referenced oil throughout history. This bottle of liquid gold promotes healthy cellular health and builds and maintains a healthy immune system. It is a blend of monoterpenes and these are metabolized in the body quickly, which means it’s fast acting! Frankincense is one of the best oils to support your mood and emotions and when inhaled or diffused it promotes feeling of peace, relaxation, satisfaction and overall wellness. When in doubt - use frankincense!
Lavender: Lavender is the swiss-army knife of oils! There’s so many ways to use this beautiful oil. In fact, lavender was the real reason I began my oil journey. I struggled for years with my sleep and lavender changed everything for me! Lavender is known as the oil to help with insomnia, anxiety, and improving your mood. It calms the central nervous system, which helps calm down all the thoughts that go through your head once your head hits the pillow. Diffuse this oil 20 minutes before bed for restful sleep. This is also an excellent oil for dry, itchy skin in the winter months! I mix a carrier oil such as fractionated coconut oil with a few drops of lavender as a moisturizer.
Peppermint: Peppermint is one of the best oils for staying focused, staying alert and energized. I love peppermint first thing in the morning to wake me up or in the afternoon slump for motivation or before a workout. This oil promotes digestive health so it’s especially wonderful to have peppermint around the holidays. I either add a drop to my water or cacao smoothie to support my digestion. Another way to use peppermint is when you need support with your sinuses, clear breathing or allergies. Diffuse this oils or apply it with a carrier oil to your chest.
On Guard: On Guard is is a powerful proprietary blend that supports healthy immune function and contains cleansing properties. It provides a natural and effective alternative for immune support when used internally. If you feel run down or like you may be getting sick, On Guard is your go-to oil!
doTERRA On Guard protects against environmental and seasonal threats with essential oils known for their positive effects on the immune system when ingested. I take 2 drops under my tongue if I feel like I’m getting sick or to protect myself when I travel. Especially before flying with all the germs flying around! Lemon: Lemon and any of the other citrus oils are one of the best ways to lift your mood for the shorter winter days. I love diffusing lemon to uplift and invigorate me. Lemon is also known for its powerful cleansing properties. I love adding one drop to my water each morning. Lemon is cold-pressed from the peel (where most of the antioxidants are) so not only are you receiving high levels of antioxidants but it also contains limonene. Limonene is a constituent that is known for its powerful cleansing properties and supporting the metabolism, digestion, immune system and respiratory function. Lemon oil is a must have for winter months! It can also be used a non-toxic cleaner throughout the home as it cleanses and purifies the air and surfaces. Add Lemon oil to a spray bottle of water to clean tables, counter tops, and other surfaces. Lemon oil also makes a great furniture polish; simply add a few drops to olive oil to clean, protect, and shine wood finishes.
Oregano: Oregano also acts as a powerful cleansing agent and offers powerful antioxidants. Oregano is one of the most potent and powerful essential oils and has been used for centuries in traditional practices. The primary chemical components of Oregano is carvacrol, a phenol that possesses antioxidant properties when ingested. Due to its high phenol content, caution should be taken when inhaling or diffusing Oregano; only one to two drops is needed. Additionally, Oregano should be diluted with a carrier oil when applied to the skin. One drop taken internally each day can help maintain healthy immune function and can be taken more frequently as needed to further support the immune system. In addition to being a popular cooking spice, Oregano also supports healthy digestion and respiratory function when taken internally. Oregano is your guy to support a healthy immune system, healthy digestion, and respiratory function.
Balance: Balance is one of my favorite blends that I use everyday. It’s a grounding blend that promotes tranquility while bringing harmony to the mind and body and balancing emotions. It’s warm woody aroma creates a sense of calm and well-being. I also use this as my ‘pure’fume. Apply this oil on the bottoms of your feet for it’s balancing effect on mood and emotions or on wrists or neck to help ease anxious feelings.
Breathe: Is the respiratory blend to use when your breathing is compromised. This blend contains Laurel Leaf, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Melaleuca, Lemon, Cardamom, Ravintsara, and Ravensara. doTERRA Breathe will maintain clear airways and easy breathing while minimizing the effects of seasonal threats. Use this when seasonal threats are high and rub on your chest if you have congestion. I especially love this blend in the morning to wake up and open everything up by adding a drop to the shower floor. doTERRA Breathe can be applied topically to the chest, back, or bottom of feet. Breathe contains Eucalyptus, which is known to help stimulate mental activity and wake up your mind. Breathe is perfect to diffuse at the office to keep everyone awake and engaged!
Purify: Is another blend to cleanse your home of harmful microorganisms or of negative energy (I use this oil in place of sage a lot), but it can support the release of negative emotions, clear energy in your home/space, and assist in emotional breakthroughs. This worked wonders for me last winter and fighting off any seasonal depression.

Rose: Rose is the queen of all oils. It holds the highest vibration of all the oils and is emotionally uplifting. The power of this oil is endless and I love that with a few swipes it helps lift your mood, aids hormonal health, promotes even skin tone, healthy complexion, and naturally helps the body release the desire for pain medication. This oil is also suggested for children to use morning, noon and night for healthy brain activity.
